Dry Cleaning vs Regular Washing Explained

Many people are unsure about the difference between dry cleaning and regular washing. Here is our guide to help you understand.

What is Dry Cleaning?

Dry cleaning uses chemical solvents rather than water to clean fabrics. Despite the name, it is not actually dry — liquids are used, just not water. The most common solvent is perchloroethylene (perc).

When to Choose Dry Cleaning

Dry cleaning is ideal for delicate fabrics like silk, wool, and rayon, as well as structured garments like suits and coats. It is also best for items with details that might be damaged by water, such as beads or sequins.

When Regular Washing Works

Cotton, linen, polyester, and most everyday fabrics can be safely washed with water. Modern detergents and machines handle these materials well at appropriate temperatures.

Our Advice

Always check garment care labels. When in doubt, dry cleaning is the safer option for expensive or delicate items. Our team can advise on the best approach for any garment.
